I use the kind that come with the stand, but a Hunter Safety System is on my Christmas list.

I have a reversible Hunter Safety System vest that I have used a lot in the last couple of yeeres, but I haven't used it yet this yeere. :o I know, I know, sooner or later a fall is coming and you never know when or how bad it could be. However, am working on making my own Prussic rope system to help me "stay hooked up" while ascending and descending.

We are required to use them in my metro hunt group. We made full body 5 point harness mandatory a few years ago when a member fell and was killed during a management hunt. We always had safety belts mandatory before that. It's like second nature to me, so much so during a trip up north this season, a buddy and I were hunting on another buddies property with him. He hunts mostly from ground blinds. The first morning I discovered I had my harness on while sitting in the blind.......Second nature.

Every singe time, even though it gets to be a PITA as it gets cold.

On the list for next season is a HSS vest thingy, or a Loggy Bayou/ Muddy Outdoors harness.

Glad to hear the testimonials to wearing them. Heck of a buck in your avatar Glen.

You're danged right! Got to much to lose if I fell, plus I don't like pain.

It's not the fall that hurts....it's the sudden stop at the end of the ride.

I have to tell you all that I am VERY happy to see the use as high as it is, Of course, I dont expect anyone to come on and take up the other side, but there are folks that read this and dont know or havent really thought about it much. It only takes one second to change your life forever. If you're lucky, you're only hurt..... if not well.... I love my wife too much to make her a widow....

I kidded with David Langston from HSS about making a harness for Jesse Morehead a couple of years back when he messed up his ankle getting out of a ground blind..... glad you were wearing yours Glen :)

Something else to think on folks,

Have you thought about where you'll land even if you're wearing your harness?

What kind of steps are you using? Do they stick out from the tree like ... spikes?

We've had folks seriously wounded by landing on or raking by their steps! They were ripped open quite badly requiring lots of stitches and some serious loss of blood.

The local Bowhunting Education course recommends some of the strap on ladder sections that carry easily and are rounded so that they won't seem like JAWS when you fall down untill the harness catches you.

No deer no matter how nice is worth a hunters life. I wear one from the start of my climb and until I reach the ground at the end of my hunt.

...then that has got to be your LONE "NO" vote in the poll ain't it JIMMY Tee

...dude, as the Nike slogan says , but could be said for the HUNTER SAFETY SYSTEM... JUST DO IT

...before that system came along, I like you was an IDIOT when it came to wearing a harness when I went up the tree...

...I saw it being demonstrated at the ATA show the very first yeere they brought it to show...after the show was over I went to see the folks at their booth...left with 2 of them...one for my Son and one for myself...

...it was sooooo simple and yet sooooo secure...it was a NO BRAINER after that!!!...

...since I have owned this PROduct, I and my Son NEVER leave to go to the woods without it...

...JIMMY Tee...if you do one thing for you and your Family...PLEASE BUY ONE VERY SOON

...it is the ONLY Safety System we carry in our Store...I have some in stock...let me know what you weigh and I will send you one...you like it, you pay me...you don't, send it back...

...same deal goes for the rest of you ASN'ers...I love y'all too much to let you wear anything less than The Hunter Safety System!!!

I dont think there are any reasons anymore NOT to wear a fall restraint since HSS has come onto the scene. They have engineered it right, and at the same time made it as safe as it gets. Personally I think it makes me a better hunter for at least this reason- it minimizes the thought in the back of your head about leaning or moving to get the shot, I have had opportunity to actually lean out against the strap to get clear of obstructions to make a clean shot.... I know that would not be possible without the HSS...

There was a HSS under the tree with my name on for Christmas, but I haven't tried it out yet.

Deere Man and everyone else,

I know I should have worn on for soooooooo many years. I had a seat o the pants form summit and it wasn't for me. I will say that I hunt out of my own ladder stands that I and a welding friend designed and built. They are extremely well built and very roomy.

I will leave the ATA with two in tow this year. check my bag on the way out Double Dee you'll see!:D

I also feel honesty is the best policy, and I also know that I am not the only one on this forum that goes without... you know who you are and you know you should be wearing one.

I answered "no" to the poll question because I don’t’ generally use one; however, I do use one while setting up and taking down stands. I know it would be better to use one 100% of the time but I somehow got out of the habit.

Thanks buddy; I appreciate the welcome and the concern. Perhaps I'll try to get started wearing one again. I've used the harnesses that came with the hang-on tree stands and I did not like how they limited movement.

Hey welcome moondog, we be neighbors!

Read the thread about Garvin getting a compound fracture of the leg, back broken or crushed in 3 places, and paralyzed from the waist down LAST SATURDAY while taking down his stand.

Now what's this about comfort and a little inconvenience? Seems small in comparison doesn't it? Strap in to the tree, or strap into the wheelchair...

I call them as I see them.

Scott,

I read the thread and I’m really sorry to here about what happened. I’ll also be praying for the miracle that Garvin and his family needs. I appreciate that you all believe in prayer as I do. Thanks for allowing me to be apart of this forum.

Glad to have you here Gary and yes, prayer is a large thing in my life as well as quite a few of us on ASN. I'd venture to say the majority!

I have a hunch we have a mutual friend. Lemme see if I can find a pic.... There we are. I get that right?

One of these just showed up in the current or last issue of Peterson's Bowhunting also I noticed the other day.

Isn't that the truth. On Oct. 9th 2004, I was helping a buddy of mine setup his lock-on tree stand for that mornings hunt. He was having some issues getting those screw-in type steps started into the tree he was using, so I went over to help him. He only had 3 of the steps in and I told him that I would help him out. So I climb up and start putting in some steps and I get a couple in and when went up to the next step to start the next one. I'm holding onto the tree with my left arm as I'm starting the step with my right and the next thing I know me feet slipped off the steps I was standing on. I slid right down the tree and the next thing I know my left arm goes completely numb, as if I had slept on it wrong and it fell asleep. I didn't notice any blood or anything else wrong at the time, until I lifted my arm up and my buddy could see to gaping gashes under my left arm and armpit.

So we get all of our stuff back to the truck and we take off back home. I get to the emergency room and they got me prepped for surgery. I ended up with 2 four inch long deep gashes that required just over an hours worth of surgery to clean out and repair.

I consider myself to be extremely lucky, the doctor told me I had just missed severing the main artery in my left arm by less than a centemeter. I am a firm believer god was watching over me that day.

Just be cafeful when using those types of tree steps cause they will mess you up.

Thank you for sharing MoT!!! Maybe others will read, pay attention, and reevaluate their gear! The exact same thing that happened to you, happened to "Big Country" a couple of years ago. BAD STUFF!

Glad you survived and yes, I agree that God guy helps us out soooo much more than we give Him credit for! Been seeing it a whole lot lately!!! He's very much at work all the time!

Like your signature line too! Class! :PDT_Armataz_23:

Every single time I go into a tree with a climbing stand or ladder stand - the harness goes on and attaches to tree - above some large limb or hook so it won't slide.

I have heard of too many accidents - people thinking they didn't need them - wished they did too late. Infact, there was a gentlemen (in his 60's) died last year from head injuries sustained falling from his ladder stand.

I want to hunt a long time - safety first - one of the main theme's in hunter safety education anyway.

I've talked about using one for a few years

I'll buy one someday

I do wear one 10 hours aday a work, hell I even got one yesterday for my hardhat after it fell off about 75 feet up.

I did fall out of a tree last year climbing down and my foot got stuck between a V in the tree and left me hanging upside down with a knot on the back of my head:o

YEAP,,,I need one!

HHS Treestaker - This will be my first year w/ it and a climber. I have taken my Bowhunter Safety Education (not required in this state) and have marked my calander for next year to watch the HSS DVD as a refresher every year before season. I feel I am ready and will be in training w/ the climber this weekend.

I've had an HSS vest for a few seasons. Started out this yeere not wearing it. Then about a month ago I had a close call while drawing at a buck. :icon_redface: The top portion of my climber fell while I'm sitting in it. :icon_eek: Still don't know what happened. Luckily the bottom portion stopped me from falling the whole 20 feet. I've worn it every time since then! ....and btw, the buck was standing 50 yards away watching me the whole time I'm trying to get myself out of that mess. Then takes off as soon as I'm standing again. :icon_rolleyes: I'm sure he had a good laugh!

I put mine on even it is only four foot off the ground.....all the time. Looking back....when I was a kid I used to climb trees (not hunting related) and didn't have harness those days. I won't go without them.

A safety belt is basically worthless. I use the vest. So much easier to put on than a harness.
