If i respect it, i'll shoot it  In all honesty though, it's usually a snap decision...

Actually, I think I would fall under a couple of those right now. Since I have never shot a deer; I would probably take the first respectable buck. However, I will also be hunting for meat so a doe would not be safe either.

I'm a meat hunter, I like to eat em' so if there of a decent size to me, they'll get shot ( or at least shot at). If a good buck comes by I won' t hesitate but I'm man enough to pop a doe. They taste better!

Im a meat hunter. I prefer a young doe, they taste better and are tender but will take a decent buck. I try not to shoot the small bucks but if the freezer is getting bare and nothing else comes along I will take whatever I can get.

I usually wait for a respectable buck to come by, but I will also "meat hunt" and pop a doe.

Most places where I hunt a buck has to be at least 16" and 8pt or better. So, with that said I will pop a doe in a heart beat, for the meat. In the past 3 yrs, I have not seen a buck that I had an urge to shoot at. I have several pics from trail cams of nice bucks I would shoot at, just did not get a chance to see them in person! :(

Interesting voting thus far. More mature only animal hunters than I expected PDT_Armataz_01_37

I voted for P&Y or better, but that is not 100% accurate.

I have passed on many P&Y bucks that were NOT mature deer.

Also, depending on where I am hunting, my minimum size changes.

BTW, being a trophy hunter....I shoot does, sometimes LOTS of does, depending on local population.

I always try and harvest a adult doe first for meat then I sit back and wait on a p&y buck and I got skunked this Past year on the buck I was a little to picky but he will be bigger this year, I will put an arrow in him.

I've been hunting for many years and I have found that in my areas it depends on the deer herd as to what I shoot. I've passed up on some mighty nice bucks to take a scrawny buck or a doe when the numbers out weigh the rest of the herd.
I could care less about bagging a huge buck with a big rack because I can't eat the rack. ;) :) 2 years ago I passed on an absolutely Huge, Old 6 X 6 buck from 10 yards out. I deemed him a keeper in the herd due to his genetics. Besides that, I figured he would be so old and tough that his meat wouldn't be worth eating....even in pepperoni sticks! ;) :)

There are some nice deer where I hunt and I put in alot of hours on the stand every season.
If I waited for a booner to show up I'd be waiting a long time indeed. I hunt for the big boys but I always settle for what is available and what is tasty. This year I passed on two nice 8 points and settled for a doe and a freak 3 point. Both deer ended up being shot and both were not older than 3 years. That is a continued problem where I hunt. Many people will only shot 8 point or better. Problem is a young deer in my area can easily have 8 points and usually gets shot before its old enough to be truely outstanding.
