For those who don't know me........I spent several years pitching fast pitch softball (taught by my father) thinking no one could teach me anything more than him. Because of my size I was intimidating, fast and had a decent win/loss ratio but I wasn't ranked in the top 10 pitchers. Then a fellow that had an eye for pitching took me aside and showed me that I needed serious help. After a few short hours he picked out some details I was missing and taught me a new approach. It took several weeks throwing balls over my catcher’s head and in the dirt but in time my strikeout average and ERA skyrocketed leading to several national titles. This guy never pitched on the same level many achieved but he had that special technique for coaching pitchers and whenever I went into a slump he could easily correct what I was doing wrong. He learned his pitching technique from the best, Eddie Feigner, aka THE KING AND HIS COURT. That’s important— great coaches pass on their experience and they have everything to gain by teaching everything they know.
Now that I’m in archery I find myself in one of those slumps and didn’t know what I was doing wrong. One day I could easily shoot a 300 Vegas round, the next day I would shoot a 295 but in a crowd I would be lucky to shoot above 290.
By watching the top shooters today I knew my bow shoulder was too high and I was shrugging, until now there was no distance between the plane of the arrow and my shoulder and no matter what I tried I couldn’t change it, if I did achieve it I was very uncomfortable.
So this weekend I spent time with a person I believe has that special technique for shooting, he has also been coached by the best— Terry Wunderle.
He watched me patiently and showed me how it’s done, comfortably and steady. Then he showed me something I could swear I wasn’t doing—punching the trigger, not real bad but a punch is a punch and anticipating the shot was causing most of my inconsistencies.
So now I’m shooting for the next 4-5 weeks at 10 yards, practicing what I learned from my new coach that was coached from the best.
Anyone needing lessons near or far from Rock Springs, Wyoming I can’t say more positive things about going to Pat Dorigatti (aka Pro1), the trip is worth every penny.
