View Full Version : What bow for a beginner?

I've been wanting to get a recurve and try my hand at it for some time now but I'm not sure what bow to get. I really don't want to dump a load on one and end up not shooting it, but I also don't want to get something that I'll outgrow too fast if I do like it. If that makes sense. I hunt from a ground blind most of the time so something a little shorter would be nice. I was thinking one in the 50# range would be ok(too much???). I can shoot 70lbs on my compounds comfortably if that means anything. I would also prefere a take down model too. Any suggestions? ???

Martin makes some real nice recurves in the $300.00 price range. You might start there. They're nice and you could hunt with them too. My dad has one.

The Martins sure look nice in photos... haven't seen one, but I like what I see (in photos). (edit... that makes sense doesn't it! ???)
For another bow that has good price to performance, I've heard a lot of good recommendations for the Checkmate recurves. Very loyal following of these bows! I've got a link to a good priced shop somewhere heere... dig, dig, dig.
As far as poundage goes, you are on the right track with a 50#'er! I shoot a 51# longbow because it's so much more enjoyable to shoot and still has pretty decent performance.
Here we go. http://www.archerybymail.com/ These folks also come highly recommended by the online folks.
Maybe the Attilla model?

Hey Trick,
Gotta be careful in comparing compound weight to recurve, you don't have any let off with a recurve... 0%. I would recommend looking for a good used bow, you can often get in to one for less than a C-note. Check over at Tradgang.com, they have a classifieds section that you might find just what you're after.

this thread is a little on the old side, but if you're still lookin' www.martinarchery.com and look under recurves
the hunter is an excellent bow for beginner and expert alike as well as is the dreamcatcher.
