I went out twice this year and was into elk both time's Got one with stick and string and bought a left over cow tag and filled that also. I was in unit 12,23,24. Out of three people in archery we killed two and saw elk everyday. During the first rifle with three people we tagged out in the first two days and saw over 150 elk in three days. it was all National Forest by the Flat tops. This is a area you might want to check out.

Shawn, where you on a DIY hunt? OR with an outfitter? I want an outfitter as I dont feel like cooking, etc. after hunting all day. And with a bad back, I need someone to fetch my 425" bull when I get him :x_biggrin:
Sounds like a good hunt you had !

DIY, There are a bunch of outfitters for hire to get your elk out. for $100. They will take your GPS and go pack it out with horses for ya. Don't even have to walk back in. It is only an 9 hr. drive so taking what I need was no problem. We would put stuff in a dutch oven and be ready when we got back. Used paperplates so dishes was not a problem.

Shawn,
I am also looking for a DIY for myself and my father in law.* Any advice you can help me with is appreciated.* If you still have the info. I would like to get from you the names of the outfitters who would pack them out etc...* You see my father in law has a very bad back and I would have one too if I attempted to pack out a 500# animal.

Shawn, you're right about that. Two trips, two bulls. Years ago I use to hunt across from the Flat Tops at a place called Lost Park. Haven't been in that area in many years. I've taken a good many deer and a few elk from the area.

Jerry,
No particular state in mind. Haven't really given it much thought, but I'm sure that my father in law and I would like a DIY'er, cheap NR tags or over the counter tags. Don't care if I get a trophy bull, just want the meat so a raghorn or cow would be perfect.
Take care

You might look at the Roosevelt National Forest west of Ft. Collins & north of the La Poudre river. Pack animals or on your back only......fewer hunters, big elk but you've got to pack it out.....bette be in great shape....the parking lot is at almost 9,000 feet!! Let me know if you want more info.....

Thank you for the suggestion but I did find a place for 2005. Maybe Paul might look into it.

Bam...Thanks for the advice, but it will be awhile before I am able to go. Probably after I finish my masters degree. My father in law and I will more than like pack in there as he has a very bad back. I'm in decent shape, but no where in shape to pack out elk for miles. I'll post more in the next year or two as I get closer and start making plans-----plus having a new baby really changes everything as far as out of state hunting goes.

newhunter1........it's not the distance........its the incline and the deadfalls. We used llamas the last few trips. Well worth the investment!!!! I also have the info on the llama outfitter. They will rent the llamas to you.
