Now that its cold, how much influence do you think yots have on deer heard. In the spring they take some fawns, but how about now, when deer are trying to conserve energy.

I dont think yotes do much to the heard in the winter, THEY DO GET THE FAWNS IN THE SPRING. I think they do get some mature deer in the winter but I dont think they have a great affect on the herd, I could be wrong as I dont have any numbers on that, I wonder if the DNR does?

It's been my experience that the coyotes have a very minimal effect on deer, sepecially in the fall winter months in my region. Even as far as spring and fawns, our 'yotes seem to do more damage to the Turkey nests than they do to the deer popualtions.

I have saw the local yotes around here waiting at the crossing areas of turkeys and stalking turkeys.
Apparently, the really like turkeys around here. I think they hurt the rabbit population alot also.

YES, you can say that again!!! About the only "rabbits" we see in our area are in a pile of coyote droppings!* :(* *As far as the Turkeys go, I seen two diifferent 'yotes up and about in the middle of the day last spring and they appeared to be actually going through the nesting areas, you know the $%@!# were searchin' for a Turkey dinner!!* :x If I would have been carrying the 3 1/2" instead of the bow they would have raided their last nests, I promise you!!! Here's a spot that I found last spring..... looks like the 'yote got the better of this one!

During the 2003 North Dakota Firearm season a group of hunters near my hometown witnessed quite an event. Two big bucks were locked at the horns the smaller one being dead getting drug around by the larger buck. A coyote was fighting the buck and was latched on to the dead deer. The hunter shot the buck and the coyote. The buck ended up scoring in the high 140's. Just one of those things you will probably never witness in the wild.. Anyways I was off the subject. I think Coyotes take a few deer, but probably just the weak and wounded animals that are suffering. Not a big factor on deer. I have seen a few instances where it looked like a group of coyotes had taken down a smaller deer in the deep snow.

I don't really know how to estimate or guesstimate the effect on the deer but on our family place in Brown Co, Texas every time I see coyote scat it is filled with deer hair. They must be killing some and I would say it had a direct effect on some  We are really covered up in coyotes and have been for the last 3-4 yrs. The rancher across the road hired some professional trappers last year and they took 60 off of 2000 acres.
