I would like to get a target release for some indoor shooting next year and was wondering for any suggestions.
Anyone shoot the copper john eagle series? Looks like a good bread between hunting and target release.
Thanks

Use an index release and I really like the Loopmaster by TRU Ball.

I currently use an indew release and was looking at back tension to improve accuracy. Sometimes I punch the trigger a little more than I'd like.

mo,
For indoors I flip flop between my Carter Just Cuz and Insatiable. However I do have a Copper John 2 finger eagle and this is my primary hunting release. I have used it for indoor target as well. It is a really great release.

In spite of its name the Carter BK Hunter is an exceptionally good release for target shooting (they really should change its name).
This release employs an open hook (talon) design which enables one to cock it, hook the D-loop and draw in one uninterrupted motion, thus bypassing the usual added step of locking a caliper onto the loop (or string). This convenience becomes more appealing the more accustomed to it I become.
In addition to the above, the BK Hunter (which is available in camo, silver or black) fits very comfortably in the hand (four finger design) and the standard Carter thumb trigger is nicely situated and fully adjustable.
This release is worth checking out. Good stuff!

I've been through a bunch in the last year and I've finally setteled on a Carter Insatiable II for the last few months. Equiped with the giant springs that GRIV and the Wildes use, I cannot find a better release for me.
I have Carter Chocolate and Zenith X-Cel, they are great both 8)

I'm shootin a 3-finger Chocolate addiction. Still shoot the old carters every now and then (Colby hinge, Target 4, Target 3, Big Kid 3D, BK hunters, an old cast stan). The all still work, but the CA is purdier. :)

I shoot a Carter Target 4 and it works great for me. A friend of mine shoots a Cascade 8 and gets pretty good results.

I have shot a CJ Eagle 4 finger for a couple years now and it is the best release I have ever used. Use it for all shooting, 3ds, spots, and hunting. It is the first release that I can actually get a surprise with.

My favorite competition release is the Carter Solution 2. It's a true backtension with a safety.
But if you're looking for a release that will do both target and hunting duty..... The Eagle is a good one.
Or I'd also recommend the Insatiable or Chocolate Addiction from Carter.
Sometimes you just gotta punch it :wink: Two more steps and that big buck is gone......
BTW...... punching does not = a bad shot. Ask onebowtie..... he's living proof......

I've got two releases now.
First was a Winn C-12 Relax Release cause I was transitioning from longbows and fingers and thought that would keep my fingers closer in tune.
Then I bought a TrueBall Short-N-Sweet buckle that I shoot off a short loop. I like this one quite a bit. Nice crisp adjustable trigger and keeps all the d/l I've got. Also found that neither release took away from my finger shooting. Different, but way more easily adaptable than I thought it would be. Cool!
But when Panzer was in town, he showed me his Carter Chocolate Addition... I may be addicted now! Think it'll be my next stop.
And sometime, I want to try pure back tension. One of these days...

Tejas,
Once I get back to Cuervo I'll send that Eagle off to you. Sorry I didn't get it sent before I left but this mission came up at the last minute.
BTW the CA is definately worth the money.

Practice with a Tru Ball back tension, shoot Tru Ball Xtreme pinky.
For me its be the Zenith Comfort 3d (4 finger) I took Tony Tazza'a advice and got away from the trigger (even though I kept saying I was shooting it back tension :) )
Scores are up and I love the release, It's done great for me!

I have been using the Atension II by Carter for a couple years. I like the adjustability and the smaller design fits me better than some of the big releases. I have found that getting a release handle that actually fits my hand aids in consistency.

I have 3 Carter Atensions all of which I cut down to a 3 finger, 1 for hunting, 1 for target, and the third is my back up for which I carry with which ever bow I'm using. At the end of last years 3-d season I bought a Just Cuz for a little more control on real hilly shots, like at the IBO worlds.

That's easy just chop the pinky finger part of the release off with a hacksaw. :D Last I heard Dave Cousins was shooting an Insat.2 with the pinky cut off.

Man am I glad to see I am not the only one that has spent more money on releases than for food! :P I shoot in a BT mode and the only caliper I use is a Tru Bal for Hunting. The Carter Colby is a litt scary for beginners since it, like others, has no safety so you will likely experience either a premature release or a punch in the nose. The Bernie Can't punch and the Answer were hellpful getting the feel. I now use a Carter Solution III, a Tru Bal Sweet Spot 4, and a Bernie Missing Link. The Slution III and the Tru Bal are the easiest to use and the safeth helps eliminate the fear of premature release. Recently I dug out an old Alpine Silverado Wheel bow and I was surprised to see how much harder it was to ge tthe releae to go off inthe same 3-5 second surprise window I get from bows with a more defined wall. I fyou do not want to get scared off pick a target release with a build in safety. The Missing Link is ok but not for beginners IMO because you have to physically make two opposing wrist motions before the unit is armed and ready to fire. It does require the least effort to fire when cocked but if you aren't used to using BT it could scare you off. Too expensive for an experiment.

I really like my Scott Little Goose. It is the best BT release I can possibly imagine. I have tried the "hand held" type releases but prefer to stick with my leather strap. I so wanted to try the Eagle by CJ but I felt weird and it changed my anchor point and I am very anal about that. I will not change that for anything, lol. The Goose has been very reliable for me.

If you are just starting to learn how to shoot Back Tension, the key word to remember is PATIENCE! It is said that "anyything you do for 30 days becomes a habit." Ergo the line"practice doesn't make perfect it only makes it permanent, perfect practice makes it perfect". In short if you are initiating the shot with the muscles in your index finger or by physically rotating your wrist with the muscles in you hand and forearm, you are not shooting with Back tension. SO what? Well the concept of using BT to fire a bow is to get you mind off the release on onto aiming. Consciously you can only do one thing at a time but subsciously you can do many. Also the sensors in your fingers are far more sensitive by design than those in your back. Once BT is learned it then becomes much more repeatable because it is now in the realm of walking which you do not consciously control, you just do it. This is why target shooters all use BT to release arrows, despite the type of release you use. Best way to learn BT is to set up a taget butte and stand back 8 feet or so so you can't miss then close your eyes and shoot just using your back muscles. It doesn't take a lot of arrows but arrows shot with out any hand or arm muscles releasing, i.e. perfect practice. Closing your eyes removes the pre-occupation of the bulls eye. Do this every day for 30 days and if you are using a pure BT release and executing properly you will be shooting with back tension. OK maybe for some it make take 45 days, but so what its' winter and it makes good use of the basement or garage and besides also keeps you conditioned.

I may be one of those people that will never be proficient with BT. The chocolate addiction to me is by far the most comfortable BT release I have used. I just can't get 60x with any BT release I have ever used. I have been using the cascade thumb relax release and shooting very well with it. I know it is a little unorthodox for target, but it really works for me. Have shot multiple 60x's in practice, just need to bring that game into competition...
karday
12-10-2004, 04:04 PM
There you have it. If you can shoot 60x's with you toes then why change anything? i don't shoot it hunting because the excitement and timing may require a conscious release. For new people they need to learn a known process then t hey can modify from there. the overall key is repeatability and whatever you can repeat exactly the same each time is what the ultimate goal should be. most top pros and teachers will tell you the reason BT works is it is the easiest to repeat. Not the easiest to learn but the easiest to duplicate under pressure of a tournament. even the joad and olympic folks use BT toget o the clicker and unsciously learn to relax fingers and let the bow pull the string vs consciously opening the fingers and risk a pluck.

I have a 4-finger Choclate Addiction that I use in combination with my CJ Eagle. I am trying to set it up (thumb position tension and travel) so with a minimum of effort I can get a good crisp surprise release. Having some trouble getting comfortable with it, any body have any advice for me on this release. Thanks in advance, Dave

I really like my fingers.
But since releases are 'in' , I've purchased 2 so I can know the beasts better (all inexpensive, used);
A Tru Fire Magnum 3 fingers, that I use from time to time pulling with my pinky;
A Stanislawsky BT with a rope - sorry, I've forgotten the model.
The Magnum did not improve my shooting a bit;
The Stani is for masochists... :D
It's interesting that in the Face 2 Face competition, many of the best shooters did not use BT.
