I saw some Clear Reflective Spray Paint in the store and wondered if it would help find arrows in the dark. *Here's my results on my field test.
I only sprayed the vanes of the arrow (1.75" AAE) and then set the arrow out at 40 yds in the pitch dark. *I took a Blue Fade w/White Crested arrow (see Blazer Vanes thread in cross Bow section) and a Tri-Angle Fade w/White Crested arrow and put them each 2' from the sprayed arrow. *I took a Black and Decker 14v light and shined it accross the lawn.
I couldn't see the crested arrows at all. *I am totally bummed. *The vanes of the reflective sprayed arrow did reflect enough light that it looked almost like a dim firefly at 40 yds. *Unless you knew exactly what you were looking for you wouldn't know what the reflection was.
The spray added 2 gr of weight to the arrow to get enough to see it. *The texture is a bit rough and it will rub off while handeling the arrow. *I don't know how well it will show up if you coat it with blood and I wasn't going to shoot one of the dogs to fid out. *Maybe I'll get out a sirloin steak and blast one through it to see.
I wondered next about reflective tape. *I have some 2" Orange reflective tape and the shooting stake I had in the yard was shining like a spotlight while I was doing this test. *Well, a 1/8" wide strip of reflective tape 2" long weighs less than 1 gr. *I put a 1/8" wide by 2/3" long strip of orange reflective tape behind each vane and WOW. *That arrow lit up like a diamond in an goat's butt.
It may not be sexy, but it sure works and adds less than 1 grain of weight *:D
I think I'm going to wrap a 1/2" wide strip just below the nock on my arrows and see how that works.
