You all probably know that. If you know the length or the height of some object, here's how to use it to determine distance to it.
Let's say you know that the van over there is 2 meters high. Take the setting thread in your teeth and span it so that the range card is exactly half a meter from your eye. When you put the bottom line under the van, see which line is near the van roof. The number by that line is to be multiplied with the van height. The result is the distance from that van, expressed in meters.
Since the card has been made so large that it can be printed on the sticker and then glued at the back side of a visiting card, the distance from the eye (i.e., the length of the setting thread) has been set to 50 centimeters. But you can use it in yards, if you wish, because it doesn't change anything with the sighting angle.
The other rim of the card is to determine angles, another useful thing when shooting from a tree, or uphill.
The card, if you decide to download and print, has to have its rim dimensions set at 9 x 5 centimeters. Any change in size will require changes in the length of the setting thread.
