I shoot between 65 and 70 on both my LX and my Conquest 3 i find that the bows shoot a bit better with the limbs locked down tight at least it works best for me

My Pro 38 pulls 61, which is plenty for any animal I will ever hunt.

The new Elite is set on 64#, but I might drop that down a touch just for that smoother draw feel.

I pulled my '03 Hoyt Havoctec out of the case yesterday and started shooting it. It is the shortest bow I own at 31" atoa but the most accurate. It is also the only 70# bow I own but is an easy draw at 64#. I thought about selling it earlier in the year but this one will be with me for a long time.

MR James, EX Edior of BOWHUNTING MAGAZINE stated recently that for years he wrot that any bow from 40-50 lbs would kill nay deer sized animal. Also he stated that any 50-60 lb bow will kill any animal from bear to elk to moose to any other large game. Look at what Fred bear did with a 65 lb recurve!!!!!!!!! Fred Bears father shot a deer at 25 yards way with a 30 lb recurve. Why blow up your shoulder or shake waiting for the animal to come out when less lbs will do.....now that is not smart!!!!!

Depending on what make and model of bow I'm hunting with on any given season, I generally prefer 65# to 67#

My bowtech sampson VFT is 70-80 and maxes out at 85#'s. I can pull it back quite easily at any of the weights even after sitting for several hours in freezing cold weather.

For hunting I have it set at 75#'s :D

I hunt with my Hoyt pro-tec set 10 lbs. lighter than what I practice at. Over the years I,ve found that works best for me.

I do pretty much the same with my Hoyt Razortec; drop 4 or 5 pounds off the draw the week before hunting season.

I shoot 63 to 64 lbs. With a 60 - 70 lb bow I feel I am ready for anything in North America. By setting it at 64 I can pull it back in any weather conditions without excess movement.

Tink,

Do African countries have minimum legal draw weights? Although 60#-70# would work fine for deer sized game, I'd think you'd need a little more for the really big stuff. I could just imagine some guy showing up with a 45# bow expecting to take a cape buffalo.

Panzer-

They enacted KE Levels and minm arrow weight* Starts at 25# KE & 400 grains for blesbuck and Impala
then 55#* KE* 65# KE 80# KE for Buffalo and* upwards like 105# KE for elephant and 875 grain arrows

This pretty much cuts out the* Traditional aspects* plus the guy has to show up at the* Wildlife Dept and be able to shoot well ie Proficiency Tests

Sorry dont have them at my Finger tips* *They are on Neil Summers Web site

Tink, wow I guess I can't go elephant hunting anytime soon. I would hate to see what poundage you would have to pull to get that kink of KE with that heavy of an arrow. I pull 84lbs and doing the math mine only comes to 52# of KE.

I shoot during the summer around 55, max it out for hunting season at 63.

Theres speed KE VS Momentum long story Momentum gives a better indicator of future penetration over KE However Sir KE is a guide

Pulling 84 lb and only getting 52 ft lb of K.E. doesn't sound right. I'm only shooting 61 lb with a 350 gr arrow at 275 FPS. That figures right at 63 ft lb of K.E. What weight arrow and how fast are you shooting ?

Oh, well, I guess I can do without an elephant for awhile. When you consider the added costs of E-sized coolbox...

BigDaddy, I think you have used the wrong formula for determining KE. Unless your drawlength is in the neighborhood of 15", you GOTTA be making way more KE than you stated. :D

The formula is.....velocity X velocity X arrow weight in grains divided by 450,240.

For example.....my last years hunting arrow weighed 413 grains, and at 67 pound draw weight it cronographed at 282fps.

282 X 282 X 413 = 32,843,412 divided by 450,240 = 72.946 ft. lbs. of KE

Hope this helps! :)

BTW, just to keep on topic :D......if I use my 2005 ProTec for hunting this season, I will shoot it at 70 lbs.

If I like my new TurboTec well enough to hunt with it instead, I will probably shoot it at around 64 lbs.

50 to 55lbs for the last 25yrs using the same H250 Oneida. Over 3 dozen deer all taken at less than 20yds and every one a pass through. This year I’m taking my new BE ESC into the woods set at 65lbs. 2413’s with a .125gr BH.
