JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri children killed a record 3,894 turkeys during this year's two-day youth turkey hunting season, the Department of Conservation said Friday.
The number of turkeys killed by children age 15 and younger during the April 9-10 season exceeded the previous state record of 3,660 set in 2003. It also exceed last year's youth turkey kill by 20 percent.
Franklin County led the state with 89 turkeys killed, followed by Laclede County with 81 and Osage County with 73. Central Missouri netted the most turkeys by region, with 637, followed by northwest Missouri with 585 turkeys.
About 70 percent of the turkeys killed were adult birds.
