the deer to the right of the albino blends in really well, and the albino sticks out like a sore thumb! i dont see how something can survive being as white as that deer is. you would never see it in the snow though!

One way is in TN it illegal to shoot albino deer. Although other predators could easily see them. We have a whole lot of coyote's here in TN

That would be awesome to see once in the wild. We have never had any albinos anywhere in my area. Wouldn't that be something cool to catch on a trail cam someday? They are illegal to shoot here in IL as well. Nice pic, thanks for sharing.

That's pretty cool, i don't know if i would have the heart to shoot one even if i saw it.

I saw an albino deer two years ago in north Alabama on our hunt club. Unfortunately, nobody believed me. I sure wish I could have gotten a photo of it! :new_puppy_dog_eyes:

I was curious as to why they would be illegal to shoot.? I know that with other animals like dogs and such, albinos are not usually used for breeding as they may carry undesirable recessive traits that shouldn't be passed along...so...why not cull the albinos from the deer herd...not that they aren't pretty, etc in their own right...but to keep from passing along traits that are not beneficial to the offspring...just curious...

I also heard they were illegal to shoot in some states. I do know from lore the Indians would never kill anything white. They claimed it was sacred.

Yeah, it's illegal to shoot them here. I saw 3 albinos last season down in middle TN. Two bucks, both appeared to be spikes to maybe a small 4 pt. and 1 doe that was actually on the adjoining property we used to hunt. Tons of deer down in middle TN in what's known as Unit L, but when they made the limits like 117 doe in one season, people kept tresspassing on the land we hunted and the landowner actually fenced the area in and told us we weren't welcome anymore either. It's aggrivating when the good guys get penalized for tresspassors or poachers!

Yea, it is illegal here in SC also. My parents had a albino buck down the road from there house. A few years ago, someone hit it though. THe town was suppose to do a full body mount for a local park. He was one that everybody in the area knew of and saw alot.

I half way agree with you on this....since it is a genetic mutation in their pigments they will never be extict until the day all deer are gone, and the only undesirable trait they have been known to carry is bad eyesight, we have an albino on our land that is 9.5years old and his eyesight just went bad last year, becasue we see him every gun season so we can check up on him, you can expect bad eyes from any deer that age...but I still do not agree with shooting, them JMHO

Thanks for the reply BuffaloCounty_32...having been involved with dogs many years ago...I recall that with most dog breeds, albinos are not bred...depending on the breed, they can suffer many types of defects...from loss of hearing to bad hearts, eyes, etc...or..they can suffer no defects...luck of the draw?
But my question is...if they are just like any other deer...then why shouldn't they be hunted like any other deer? Personally, I'd take a pass on it....but shouldn't that be the hunters choice? Just read the recent issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News, and their historic photo this issue shows a hunter who harvested a piebald buck in 1939...interesting photo and a very striking buck I might add....personally, I'd have probably marveled at the beauty and taken a pass...obviously, not all of us think alike...
Not looking for an arguement...just curious...

Ray, I think it stems from the albino's being thought of as a special gift from the Great Spirit by the Native Indians. Other cultures have similarly credited the albinos the same way. So I'd say it comes from a respect of the land and all things sacred.

Tejas, I understand that...but since the government supposedly wants nothing to do with religious beliefs, I figured there wouldn't be a law based on those beliefs...thought they may have had other reasons in mind...but if that's the only reason, that's fine by me....
....like I said, I'd personally pass on them if I saw one...just figured that it should be the hunters' choice not the government's choice...esp after seeing the photo of the piebald buch harvested in 1939...it looked like a beautiful animal and I would probably have passed...but them, maybe for that gentleman it was either take it and eat or starve...didn't have the modern conveniences back then that we do now....

Ray, as I know (?) it, the law goes way back to the time before PC and quite as much gov't intervention as we have now. In Texas also, a pie-bald is NOT an albino and as such is fair game for hunters. It's only the pure albinos that are verbotten.

I agree that it should be hunters choice, since they technically can't go extict, personally I would definetly pass too, I think they are pretty neat
