Curious to know what style or styles of traditional bows you all have.

I shoot Longbow - Hybrid, Selfbow - Wood, Recurve, Compound - Fingers. I used to have a traditional Longbow, but it's now in the possession of Panzer. Future bows on my wish list include one of the Saluki Asiatic styles and a better Compound for fingers... longer ATA than I currently have.

Red Oak eh? I've got a buddy with an Oak bow. Casts arrows quite well, especially the heavier ones. I've shot it a fair amount while trying to keep the draw down to his level... he's quite a bit shorter draw than I am so I used his arrows until they got back to my hand. Worked ok and I got to try out another bow... Cool! Be sure to tell us how it works out and what style you're making it.

the piece of wood im making my bow out of isnt the best piece of wood but i was more into learning how to work with the wood more than anything! i dont really have high expectations as of how it will shoot. im really just using this stave as a practice piece, but if i can get it to shoot it will be icing on the cake. ive got the back of the bow down to one continuous grain and i rough cut the front profile. that leaves me to work on the belly of the bow and the handle, and A LOT of sanding. im goin to make this bow with just a regular longbow style. or i should say, im goin to TRY to make this bow with a regular longbow style! there is still no telling on how it will turn out! ill post pictures of it when i get it done.

Yea, if you're expecting it to go, it won't be a big deal. If it doesn't, you can pat yourself of the back and crow about it!

Longbow-Hybrid, Selfbow and Compound-fingers. Also have a couple old South Bend, Stream-Eze glass takedowns that I drag out occasionally, just for fun.

ive got my bow whittled down to the basic shape and i am finishing the handle and the thickness of the limbs to the right draw weight, and also tillering. i still dont know how it will turn out, but if it does break, ill hang her up in my house cause its goin to be a pretty bow. ill post pics when i get her done.

IT CRACKED... im taking it to Jefferey archery in Columbia SC to see if glassing it will allow me to shoot it. but i got it down to 40 pounds at 22 inches and as i held it for just a split second too long it developed a crack on the outside of the limb. maybe glassing it will help... not sure... if you have any info i would be glad to hear it! thanks...

Welcome to ASN! :PDT_Armataz_56:

It's always good to see our brothers from overseas, it gives us Americans insight into different aspects of the sport.

Ahti is from Finland, I think he's a compound shooter though. There may be more.

As this is my first post on this forum, the question as to what type of bow I shoot is a good place to start.. My English Longbows are all Bickerstaffe's.
My main shooting bows are.
1. 74" 55lb self Osage
2. 74" 50 Italian Alpine self Yew
3. 74" 55lb Snakewood /hickory back
4. 74" 55lb Yew/ Hickory back.

Welcome to ASN St. Crispins Day! There's got to be some kind of story behind that name! It doesn't ring a bell, so you might have to tell it to us. :D

I've read about Bickerstaffe's bows in the magazines. You're the only other archer that I've seen that has bows longer than mine too! My Hickory Selfbow done in the American Flatbow style is 72", 55#. Been a while since I've shot it... need to make up some new arrows.

Actually, it's been a while since I've shot the longbows since I've strayed into the compound world a couple of months ago. Different, but fun too. Still, there's nothing like a sliver light longbow in your hands!

Thank for the welcome..
The name I've chosen is the day of the battle of Agincourt as recounted in Shakespear's Henry V

And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
Make him a member of the gentry, even if he is a commoner.
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

As I mentioned before. those are my main shooting bows , my other Bickerstaffes are
76" 65lb bloodwood / hickory* only used for Roving mark shooting
74" 60lb Osage/ hickory* only used for clout and wand shooting

I had a sneaking suspition that it was sonthing like that. The giveaway? Soooo many Bickerstaffe's!

There was a special on the History Channel we get that was on The Battle of Agincourt a few months back. Wish I'd gotten it recorded as it was quite interesting. Of course there have been the articles in Primitive Archer magazine which I get occasionally too.

I've not shot an English Longbow, but it would be interesting to shoot one side by side with my flatbow to compare shooting characteristics. Always interested in new things. It's fun!

It's also time to liven up this heere Traditional Forum! I've been too lax. Let's see what we can do eh?! :D

Traditional Archery, I guess, has a whole different meaning over here in the U.K. Recurves aren't considered a traditional bow. The Long bow as we know it is completely different from the U.S. definition. Arrows are another point of difference, for example you would never , ever find anyone shooting carbon or aluminium arrows from an English longbow. The competitions for the longbow are more varied in the U.K. . As well as the standard target and field shoots, we also have Clout, Roving Mark, Popinjay, and Wand. Distances are also different York Target rounds are popular (100, 80, 60 yards) Clout 180 yards Roving Mark (50 up to 200 yards).

Sounds like ya'll have a blast! I shoot all arrows from mine. Woodies, Aluminium, and Carbon. Of course, the selfbow gets only wood! The variety of events is something I wish we had here in the states. I've shot a number of times at the longer ranges with some of my buddies who shoot traditional. Up to around 125 yards once, but that was more like flinging them with a prayer, LOL! Still, we had a great time which the compound guys will never quite see with their style. Sights sure can be a limitation. Doesn't that sound funny?! :D

I shoot my longbows mostly, for hunting at least. Have 4. Have 2 flatbows to play with. 17 recurves(1 even left handed and I am right :). And 2 Olympic recurves for target. We wont count the compounds :)

Just got my new custom Hamilton Classic longbow . I have shot a nice doe this year with a longbow ! I have two friends from Austria that shoot nothing but longbows and wood arrows . When they come over to hunt I have to hunt with the longbow . :D Which is fine with me , I shoot my compound with fingers most of the time !
