Mike, some of the Trad shooters will be around shortly to answer your questions. I'm thinking no more than 15 to 20 yards for beginners. Whoa, I just re-read your question and saw it said 20 lb. limbs. It may be more like 10 to 15 yards. I don't know.

Start out at 10. Stay there for a while until you get used to it.
Never shoot until you're tired. Always quit while you're a "little hungry" for more! Getting tired is where you learn "bad habits"... and then have to "un-learn" them!!!
When you feel like it, or are finally wondering "how it will do", move out to 15 or 20 to get a taste. If you're not happy with the results, go back to 10 for a while. I go back shorter all the time. It keeps the confidence up! Every now and then... go for some 40 yard shots. Why not, it's all about having FUN!
Longer ranges can be a lot of fun, but you'll get better quicker by staying up close for a good while.

what about going out to 60 to 80 yards? the better you get out at those yardages the better your gonna be at the shorter distances! then 40 yards will be a breeze to shoot.

You could easily do 20 yards, but your best bet is to stick to short distances and get your form correct.
Have fun!

In the beginning this will be all about learning proper shooting technique.
You may want to hang out at a local range for a little instruction to get a jump start.
Start with the cheap paper plate at 10 yards.
After you can keep them all on the plate, move back another 5 yards and start over.
Your 20 pound limbs will be great fun on small game and birds (with Flu-Flus) but most states require around 40 pounds for deer hunting (and rightly so).
Ten yards is a good place to start; however, should you get into a large field, a round hay bale (one of the BIG ones) is a great target from 100 yards. Your arrows will be coming down at quite an angle from that distance so loosing them is hard to do. They will be sticking up pretty high.
Safety is of utmost importance so let me reiterate LARGE, UNPOPULATED FIELD.
With a little practice you will be surprised how well you can do at this extended range. If there is a lot of wind, forget it. Your 20 pound limbs will not launch a heavy enough arrow fast enough to buck the gusts well.
As a young man I shot a 25 pound recurve for many years and my draw is still 27 inches long.
You are going to have a lot of fun, I promise.
