Do you guys think this would have any effect on the animal in this weather (sub zero wind chills)???* Must have been a fence scrape because it doesn't appear to be a wound? Heck of a bald spot though!

Heck of a bald spot, for sure. Seems awfully big to be a fence scrape, but i dunno what else it could be.

That is definately a bald spot but I am not sure if a fence caused that, it could of but it must be going under it alot, If anyone has an idea of what caused this please post, that is worn through the hide it looks like, I am going to sticky this one till we can get an answer or thoughts on this, GREAT PIC CORNFED!

Yes, the skin appears to be totally GONE, in fact that looks like pure back strap doesn't it??? I really don't know what would tear it off like that unless it had some run in with a vehicle, bet IF that happened I would suspect more damage??? Don't have ANY other pics of the animal so we don't even know what sex it is BUT it is a young animal. STRANGE indeed????

Looks like he got hit by a car and skidded on his back I have seen that on deer we dragged several 1000 yards
Something yank the hair off a skid on pavement would do it My 2 cents DUNNO

It looks clean and doesnt look like there is any infection, Animals can endure alot of things us humans couldnt imagine.
I'll bet she is trying to figure out where the draft is coming from....
That kind of a hair loss, even though it looks minor could be trouble if she wasnt able to get some real chow and was just in maintenance mode for the winter... she is probably glad she has that stump feeder :)

I have seen cattle loose hair in spots such as this looks from parts that froze during the winter. See it at the sale barns a bunch this time of year. Could this be a reasonable guess?

Jerry, I have NO idea what it's head looks like, buck, doe,..... don't know???? It does appear to be a young immature deer compared to others at this location.

Maybe it's missin it's head too
My guess would be that it had a small bald spot from crossing a fence. With the cold temps it may have froze the exposed spot and a small surrounding area. After freezing the hair would likely fall out causing a larger and larger area to freeze. That is just a guess. The coloration of the skin looks a lot like when coyotes have mange here in the winter and the exposed skin freezes. The hairless area turns hard and bluish black colored.
