How many of you put out food plots? If you do, what do you put out and when? When do you plant them spring or fall?
I bought some food plot seed yesterday called Secret Spot made by the Whitetale Institute. It's one of those types of seed's that doesnt require much soil preperation at all. What I'm planning on doing is, keeping a photo journal of my plots progress throughout the growing season and posting it on here.
And if anyone else wants to post up and share any tips or pic's on past, or present success or failures please do so.
This thread can also serve as a learning tool for those that have thought about putting in food plots, but wasn't sure on how to go about it. I'm gonna admit I don't know much about this sorta thing either, but I'm gonna give it my best and learn as I go.

This could be a very informative thread! I have been contemplating putting out a plat or two! All of my hunting for deer seems to take place along cropland, but to have something that would be there well after frost is of interest to me! I was also wondering how many of you put out minerals or supplements. :5grouphug:

You know me Mike I'm a big believer in using minerals. And I plan on putting some out near my food plots.

I will be starting this project as soon as the Missouri spring turkey season ends. Once I start seeing plant growth and seeing some activity of wildlife usage. I'll set up my trail camera on the plots.

Ladino clover is real good and its fairly easy. If you want to put a little work into one plant some Roundup Ready Soybeans .
Late season standing soybeans IMO are the best plot a person can have . Add some snow and cold temps = deer and turkey heaven .

Thanks for the info Bob, I was just reading what was all in this bag of seed that I bought and it has Oats, Multi cut Berseem Clover, Crimson Clover, Yucchi Arrowleaf Clover, Winter Wheat, Six Point Chicory, and Ladino Clover. Plus a mixture of Rape seed and Ryegrasses.

Hmmm, soybeans would be easy, my biggest problem in my area with that is probably moinsture, but out west I may try that!!!!

You can cheapin the RR soybean plot up by getting some Bin run beans and planting them . You can do this as long as you dont harvest any . Monsanto gets upset if you do. !
If you read most plot seed mixes they are just common stuff you can buy cheaper and mix them yourself. :5bowtie:
Wheat is not bad for a fall seeded plot , easy and cheap . Again try and find some bin run seed . :PDT_Armataz_23:

Well the only thing that will be harvesting the beans will be the deer...lol But I appreciate all your input. I'll look into getting some of those soybeans.

Hmmm, you know, wheat does grow quickly, is tender, and hardy, handles the light frosts fairly decent!!! Hmmmmm, not a bad idea!!!!!!

And the idea didnt cost you a thing !:5bowtie:
If everything works right with wheat , you can shread it the next summer and it will reseed itself . :XX3d:

Well come May 11th. (if I dont have to work that day) I'll be starting to look for some areas to start up some food plots. I have got a couple areas picked out that look good on the topo map I have of the areas, now I just need to get out there and go look these places over and make my decisions on where to put them.
you talkin bout for a summer crop Scott? How much land do you have to work with? We plant wheat but its not til the second sat in sept. We bush hog the plots a couple weeks before to allow the grass to rot and get brittle. The when we hit it wit the disc, it bust up real well.

Actually I'm gonna work on both Tom. I want to get some food out for them now and I'll probably make another food plot or two late summer, early fall.

I was given the hint to to a late plant of turnips (probably late August/early September). I was told his will provide an aromatic and natural attractant plus holding power as they will paw them up to eat. Also by planting later, the turnips will not be too big and will be a huge enticement pre-rut and early rut.
This is my first go at this. I will also be planting a small food plot using similar seed as you Scott.

Good deal Jim. Keep me posted to how yours turns out. Turnips may not be a bad idea. Thanks for the tip.

Well I went out to the place that I am wanting to plant my food plots, but the bad thing was with all the bad storms we had this last Friday, there were a lot of trees that were blown down across the roads. So I'm gonna have to wait a bit until those roads are clear to be able to get down them and get to where I need to go. So I'll try it aging next Monday.

Well a few days have passed and I'm hoping those roads are cleard of all the down trees. So I guess I'll try my luck again this coming Monday to scout out some areas to put some food plots.

Well, I went and set out a trail cam and was pleasantly surprised to see that wheat had been planted where I hunt, so i am thinking as soon as they harvest it, I just may plant a fall type of plot!!!!! Now the wheat is a little behind schedule here, but I will be looking at what might be good to plant in August!!!!

Well I was finally able to get out to do some looking around and I think I've found a couple good spots to put out my food plots. One of the spots has some nice size rubs near it from this last season. So I went ahead and setup my trail cam in this clearing just to see what I have to work with. I'll pull the cam at the end of this month and hopefully I'll have a better idea on the deer movement. And then I'll start the prep work for the food plot.

Well I was able to get my cam earlier today and from the pics I had on it I think I found a good spot for my food plot. Here are some pics I got from that area. Now I just have to start the prep work for the food plot.

Well I'm kinda in a delima about whether or not I should put out a food plot in this new area I found. My main concern is the wild hogs in this particular area and them possibly eating up the plot before the deer have a chance to. I know I have a decent buck worth pursuing, but I'm not sure if it will be worth the effort and hard work to put out a plot that may be destroyed by the hogs.
I had 177 pics on my cam this last month, mainly of hogs, but some deer as well. I had set out some minerals just off of the clearing in hopes that I would get a better pic of the buck I was looking for. Well I got those pics of him but they were all at night and in the early morning hours. I did have a nice lookin' doe come visit the mineral site during the day. Here are a few pics.
