I have been wondering if there were any advantages or disadvantages of using the traditional bows. I have an older bear whitetail unlimited compound now, and although it is fine for me now it gets heavy after awhile. I am just starting out bow hunting and like the idea of doing it the traditional way. I guess thats why I enjoy staying on the ground and using natural blinds rather than staying in tree stands. Most people I have talked to don't believe these bows or still hunting is the way to go. Just figured I'd see what others thought.
I guess it comes down to what "makes" the hunt. Is the hunt the pursuit? Or the taking of game? If it is the pursuit, then anything that challenges us more makes the accomplishment that much sweeter. I am in awe of archers like Howard Hill, Fred Bear, and the countless others that did it with stick and string. I think sometimes we lose sight of the remarkable feats that these men accomplished. I have not yet gone back to stickbows, but someday I will. I am sure that it will be the most gratifying thing I will do. :)

Advantages? You said it. They don't weigh squat! Mine's maybe 15 ounces? You can carry that puppy all day and forget it's in your hand!
Disadvantages? Everything else! They're not as accurate. Nowhere near as fast. Got to get real close if you shoot like I do. Ooops! And everyone will tell you there ain't no way you can hunt with one of them old thangs.
So what you waiting for? Get a stick and get with it!
Oh, and we have way more fun than them other guys! Get a group of stickbow shooters together and watch the arrows fling. Lots more light hearted and uplifting. Jokin and funnin everywhere!
Welcome to our madness!

And how! The weight difference is HUGE! Although around here I see a lot of people going traditional as a crutch or excuse so they don't have to be as accurate. In most cases they got panic so bad with a compound they went to a recurve in order to say "well these just aren't as accurate" Anyway, I love shooting traditional myself. The only thing that is frustrating for me is I know I am not as proficient as I should be with it, but I also don't put the time in either. :? Still have a blast with it though.

all this shoudl be qouted for truth! great posts guys!
...adn when it comes to traditional archery just like the other forms..but i believe more so than the rest..you get out what you put in.
nothing is more critical wtih everything being exactly the same everytime than traditional...when you shoot the same scores folks with a compound shoot...you've got something to be very proud of...but all yer goals shoudl be yours..and make them obtainable... :D
i have enjoyed nothing more than the purity of the shooting itself...nothign but a blissful moment in heaven..

I have for many years enjoyed all aspects of archery, traditional
and compound.. It takes a lot of time and dedication to become
proficient with traditional equipment. Most folks just don't have
the time to become proficient but it can certainly be done.. Many
compound shooters(hunters) I know dust off their compounds one
month before season opens and shoot it just long enough for
gun season to open.. you'd never get away with this mindset shooting
traditional.. it's an every day affair if you're going to be good with
it..

wow. thanks for the replies. I'm gonna start checkin some of your posts for Ideas on descent bows which won't break my bank (Laid off for the winter). But I am excited to try it out. I am involved in other sports that take the same qualities y'all are talking bout. and the fact that not as many are as good at it makes it even better, thanks.

I have shot both compound and Traditional over the years and get alot of fun out of my Trad bows. I am spending more time shooting compound lately but I'd have to say that Trad is my favorite. I am shooting a Chek-Mate Firebird @ 45lbs and like the way that bow zipps out an arrow.

I was looking through my bookmarks for bows by Dan Quinlan. He's been around traditional archery since the beginning of time. He sells an unfinished, tillered selfbow for $60-$70 and all you have to do is put stain and/or your choice of finishes on them. Cheap way to get into it since you're layed off. Been there, know how it is!
Here's another place to look around with lots of bows, some used I think too:

One advantage is that when you hit the X it's a BIG BIG deal! disadvantge........you (at least I) won't be hitting the X all that often  LOL
